How many times have you had a friend or colleague tell you that they had a bad first day at their new job? They complained that they didn’t have a computer or they may have sat at a desk all day without any direction. This is like going to a party without knowing a single soul. This can demotivate a new hire and possibly make them regret joining your organization. You want your new employee to feel welcome and acclimate to the culture as soon as possible.
Here are some tips to onboard new employees successfully:
- Have a welcome email waiting in the new employee’s inbox. This will definitely put a smile on their face since their inbox will be empty.
- Share the new employees profile with the entire team so that they will be familiar with the new hire. (resume, hobbies etc.)
- Create a training schedule for their first week of work.
- Have a dedicated employee be the new hires buddy for their first week.
- Provide new employee with an organizational chart along with a cheat sheet of all the employees’ names in the department and their extensions.
- Create a list of restaurants in the area for them to get lunch.
- Sit with the new hire at the end of their first week to get a sense of what they learned and what they would need to focus on the following week (repeat this for at least 3 weeks in a row).
As you know, it is very expensive to replace an employee so make sure they are welcomed into your organization and feel comfortable asking questions!
